How to Keep Your Heart Healthy

You work out regularly to keep your muscles strong. You visit the dentist twice a year to keep your teeth in good condition. You even take your car regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly.

But what have you done for your heart health lately? It keeps your blood pumping and it’s one of the only parts of your body you can’t live without. So, chances are, the more you learn about how to keep your heart healthy, the longer you’ll live!

3 Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy

Heart health is crucial for your overall health. But risk factors are everywhere. From inactivity to a poor diet, they all increase your risk of heart disease. And if you have conditions like high cholesterol and high blood pressure, you need to reduce your risk of heart disease and heart attacks more than others.

A healthy diet, physical activity, and an overall healthy lifestyle are just about the best ways to minimize the risk of developing heart disease for everyone. Here are just a few other tips to keep your heart in good health.

  1. Maintain a Healthy Weight – Think about it this way: your heart pumps blood to all parts of your body. If you are 20% overweight, or 30 pounds overweight for a 150-pound person, your heart has to work 20% harder.
Healthy eating is the best way to manage your weight. Healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, deliver a double bonus. First, they give your heart and body lots of good nutrition. Second, they don’t bombard your body with high levels of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.

  2. Cut Out the Vices – Smoking and alcohol consumption are among the leading causes of heart disease. And they are bad for your health in too many other ways to list here.

  3. Destress – Studies have shown that stress is detrimental to your heart health in a number of ways. Primary among them is chronic stress to unhealthy levels of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Stress is also linked to altering how blood clots form and that increases your risk of heart attack.
