How Healthy Can a Smoothie Be?

First, we’re not talking about any old smoothie here. We’re talking about our Ultimate Golden Smoothie. Of course, all our smoothies are made refreshing with the healthy, nutritious ingredients.

To help back-up that claim, we thought we’d look at just one of our smoothies. Below, we list the ingredients in the Ultimate Golden Smoothie and the health benefits each ingredient delivers.

The Proven Health Benefits of the Ingredients in an Ultimate Golden Smoothie

1. Turmeric

Turmeric gives curry, and our smoothie, it’s golden colour. The main active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Among curcumin’s other benefits, it increases levels of the hormone BDNF in the brain, which spurs neuron growth. It lowers your risk of heart disease and cancer, and may lower your risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.  And one study of 60 people found that curcumin was as effective as Prozac at battling depression symptoms.

2. Almonds & Almond Milk

Almonds are one of the most nutritious nuts you can eat. In just 100 grams of almonds, you get over 20% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin E, manganese and magnesium; along with 9 grams of healthy fats, 6 grams of protein and 3.5 grams of fibre. Almonds are also high in antioxidants, help stabilize your blood sugar and lowers your cholesterol.

3. Dates

It’s probably rare that you find yourself hanging out, just snacking on some dates. But that’s a shame. They are a great source of fibre, protein, potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron and vitamin B6. Relatively low in the glycemic index, dates can regulate your blood sugar levels. They appear to have higher levels of antioxidant content than other similar fruits, like figs and plum. And they have been linked to easing labour during childbirth.

4. Cinnamon

Used mainly as a natural flavour enhancer, cinnamon also has a number of health benefits. Like every other ingredient so far, cinnamon is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. But it also can increase sensitivity to insulin in those with insulin resistance. Combined with the lowering effect it has on blood sugar levels, cinnamon is considered to have a strong anti-diabetic effect.

5. Black Pepper

Black pepper is known to improve digestion, and to promote the removal of toxins from your body through sweating and urination. It has antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. And, perhaps best of all, one of its key ingredients, piperine has been shown in many studies to improve cognitive functioning.

6. Banana

Where do we begin? Of course, bananas are well known for their nutrient content, including 10% of your recommended daily intake of potassium in a medium banana. And they deliver many of the same antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties listed for the ingredients above. Their relatively high levels of fibre help improve digestive health, moderate blood sugar levels and make you feel fuller, so you eat less. What bananas aren’t often credited with is their benefits for kidney health.

Believe it or not, we didn’t list absolutely every health benefit of every ingredient of the Ultimate Golden Smoothie.
