4 Tips for Customizing Your Diet to Your Needs

One of the reasons why you might not be getting the health and/or weight loss results you’re hoping for from your diet might be because it isn’t tuned for your body, preferences and nutritional requirements.

We all metabolize foods differently and you might not benefit from a low-carb diet the way your bff does. Without knowing why it didn’t work for you in the same way, you can feel like you’re the problem (which you aren’t) and abandon your plans.

You can get more from your diet by following some or all of the following guidelines to make to customize it to your body’s needs.

Identify Food Sensitivities

Allergic reactions don’t always mean, sneezing, watery eyes and/or skin rashes. From major issues like lactose intolerance to almost imperceptible increases in internal inflammation caused by certain foods, your body’s reaction to foods can negate their health benefits.

What Do You Crave?

A food craving can be a sign of a nutrient deficiency. A simple example is, if you’re desperate for a bag of chips, you might need some salt. So put healthy foods in your diet to satisfy your most common cravings. If you have a sweet tooth and crave things like ice cream and candy, try some fruit instead.

Explore Your Ethnic Roots

Whether you have never really eaten a lot of the foods associated with your ethnic background, or you have them all the time, don’t let some diet put you entirely off them. They can be very comforting and uniquely familiar. And you’re more likely to savor each mouthful rather than mindlessly wolfing down your meal.

Look for Emotional Eating

Maybe it’s a reward for a tough workout, or maybe you love the bowl of popcorn as much as you love the movie, but we all have emotional connections to food that can blind us to exactly what we’re eating and how much. Pay attention to those times when eating might be an emotional response and make sure you eat the right foods.
